Stills from the frames that will make up my final animation

I decided the backdrop to this animation should be a beach because of the imagery provoked when I first listened to the piece of music, Sun, Drums & Soil. Some of the first things that came to mind as I listened to it were a warm place such as a beach setting.

The ending of the animation is a childish belief in payback for one of the people that covered her in sand in the first place!

I believe this story board idea covers all the 3 main points I decided on at the start of this project:
-Warm
-Confusing
-Changing
The setting covers the idea of "warmth" and the "confusion that occurs as the person being covered in sand wakes up to realise what's going on, and finally, its a changing pace. It starts off quite slow and tranquil, then becomes more manic as the story unfolds and the two people pulling the prank get a taste of their own medicine!

The chase scene will have to be extended to make this animation up to 30 seconds long.

refining my story idea

This is the story board I have come up with so far:

Closer up, the story goes like this:

From here Person 1 gets up after realising what has happened & starts chasing person 2 & 3 around the beach and eventually to the shore line where he pushes one of the culprits into the sea as payback!

This is quite a fast paced idea similar to the beat of the piece of music & I believe it suits the piece of music that will be played over the final animation.

playing around with stop frame animation

These are some very short stop frame animations I made using scrabble letters & bananas. This was just a practice to see how I'd best construct my final submission. These experimental stop frames taught me that I'll need to keep the camera in a central position to keep a steady frame shot. Also I'll have to make the movements more precise to keep a better flow to the animation.

story board ideas

From the 3 words I got from listening to the piece of music "Sun, drums & oil"I then went on to mind map around my 3 chosen words:

The main ideas to come out of this were:
-beach/sunshine
-"what's going on??"
-motion/movement

These are the words I want to base the ideas of my animation around.

I came up with this idea, shown here in story board form:

stop motion animation research

I have been researching animation project on YouTube and have found a selection created in different styles that I find inspiring and will hopefully help with the development of my work.
This initial research has shown me there are lots of ways to create an animation, specifically in the field of stop motion. These examples come from all sorts of sources including music videos and from some of my favourite independent films such as Eagle V. Shark and The Science of Sleep and they use anything from real people, objects, pen on white board, sand and clay. This gives me a lot to think about with regards to my subject area!

Sun, Drums & Soil

For this print to pixel moduel I have been given the piece of music called "Sun, Drums & Soil"

When first listened to this piece of music it immediately started quite franticly and built up from there. Through out the piece there was a mixture between quite earthy tribal sounds in the form of drumming combined with a more jazz-like feel from a saxophone instrument. There piece didn't settle into a specific feel, but kept changing from fast to slower, to loud to softer. There was a constant rhythmic feel to the music but the tempo & feel kept changing.

If I was to describe this piece in three words I would have to choose:

-Warm

-Confused

-Changing
